War Thunder

Haven't been playing BF3 much lately. I thought End Game would help rekindle my interest in it, but not so much. But I saw a vid by FrankyonPC about War Thunder, and remembered someone on TS saying they were playing it last month or so, so I decided to check it out.

It's free to play, but there are micro purchases one can make to get exp faster & such.

I didnt think I'd like it much at first because the controls are alot different then say the jets in BF3, but after a few days I did get used to it, and I even finish rounds at the top sometimes

I havnt looked into playing with friends, but I did see an option to invite people into a squad or something like that... so it might be cool to get a group together & own shit up sometime.

Theres a good few of us who play it but we havent been on it in a while.

The squads are limited to 4 or 5 people and it gets pretty intense.

ok, so I've logged ALOT more play time since I made this post. Here's what I think about it:

RU planes are OP. But not shocking seeing as it's a Russian made game. It also feels as if the US planes are purposely nerfed. Again, not too shocked due to where the game comes from. But with that said, it's still a fun game.

There's alot of variety, the battles are large, and to come out on top you really have to be aware of your surroundings, you're planes capabilities, and that of the enemies you face (It's NOT like BF3 where both side's jets basically have the same performance). While being good in a dog fight means alot, to really do good in the game you have to know when to engage and when to bug out, get a better position, and re-engage.

While I find that using heavy bombers requires a whole different skill set, and is a challenge to master, it's entertaining in itself. But... it's rather unrewarding (to me, so far) because you dont earn as many points for being good in a bomber. Fighters end up nailing more ground targets then dedicated bombers, plus when done with that they can dogfight and earn the big points. I hope they fix this balance issue an a soon coming patch.

I'd think that any of you that really love the air combat in BF3 should give this one a try. It's so much more emersive & diverse, seeing as it's am air combat sim as opposed to a shooter with an air element added in.

Also worth noting: when I started playing, there were only servers in the RU & EU. And that meant rather high pings. But the game has been picking up more & more US based players, and as a result, they opened up some US servers the other day. Since my ping is still a bit high, I assume they are on the west coast. But it's still a much better ping then the EU servers I was playing on before.

It's a free to own/play game, so if you're even slightly interested, go d/l it & give it a shot. If you dont dig it, it's a simple uninstal with nothing lost

 

I gave it a try and couldn't get into it. I don't know if my joystick just sucks, but I found it an awful experience to fly with one, which pretty much makes it a nonstarter for me.
