    Me and Bacon would be up for this if we were on at the same time and weren't doing anything else.

    I agree with this wholeheartedly. I think we could go to a "fly what you want" format. There would have to be some restrictions, of course. This would be fairly simple to do. You take all of the players in a given round and determine what the highest battle rating available to all of the pilots in that round. Everyone would be restricted to flying an equal or lower battle rating to the lowest high rating. Sounds confusing, but it's not. Let's look at the example tourney I posted earlier...

    In that tourney, Round 1 had eight pilots in matches "A" and "B". Let's say that pilot "Xxx" in Match "B" had a 2.7 as his highest battle rating for any plane. That means that the other seven pilots are restricted to a battle rating of 2.7 or lower. Any plane that fits that restriction is available for that round. You repeat the same process for Round 2, the Semi-finals, and the Finals. I think that is a fair process.

    Now, there are obvious pitfalls to this. Pilots will have to choose wisely, because we use a full pass and turn to fight format to start matches. A turning fighter could have a distinct advantage over a pure energy fighter. Using the same 2.7 battle rating example from earlier, a P-40 (rated 2.7) might get it's ass handed to it by a Spitfire Mk IIa (also rated 2.7). By the same token, if you put Highlander in a Chaika or Ernst in a Ki-43 (both under a 2.7 and legal in this format), those two might very well dominate an opponent that chose to fly a Kittyhawk or Spitfire.

    To fly P-40s or F6Fs, as SeansBeacon suggested, I think we would have to keep the "everyone flies the same plane" format. That's not necessarily a bad idea, as it keeps the playing field leveled as far as equipment goes. Again, we would need to determine the highest common denominator in tier and rating so that everyone could fly the same plane.

    Just some more brain food...

    Thank you all for your participation last night in the duel event and for your constructive input both during and after the tournament.

    Next week we will be picking different planes for teams to fly. These planes will need to be easily accessible to new players, so they will likely only be in the first two tiers for now. For those who would like to nominate planes to be flown, please submit a brief summary of your reasoning to either myself or XErnstX. During the tournament the planes the teams will fly will either be randomly assigned or team chosen based on the outcome of sortition.

    Post-Mortem of Duel Event on 04/05/2014

    The planned scenario for last night's duel event was to have eight teams in a double elimination tournament, flying Tier 1 "Chaika" planes. Before the tournament began, we had two teams drop out of the running due to real-life issues. This was a scenario for which we had not prepared and for which we had not the tools to properly manage.

    During the active matches of the tournament, two problems kept recurring: turning too early and not being at the same altitude. Throughout the event, nearly every team and participant was guilty of this at some point. This problem comes solely down to our lack of explanation on the rules of engagement.

    For the most part, the tournament proceeded as planned and was concluded roughly two and a half hours after its outset with the team consisting of SeansBacon and DeadlyWalrus as its winners and the team consisting of HIGHLANDER and WindsOfBoreas as its runners-up.

    From this event, two errors have been highlighted that we must correct: one, the bracketing system must be able to react to changes in the team and tournament setup and; two, the organizers must thoroughly communicate every aspect of the rules to avoid confusion and misstarts. Some solutions to these complications follow:

    1. Bracketing: thanks to new member Goobzor, we now have a resource with which to make proper brackets and adapt to changes more easily (http://challonge.com).
    2. Communication:
    • Create a new thread for the duels outlining every rule and practice including scenarios and variables;
    • Outline at the beginning of each duel event the rules and practices and allow for time for participants to raise questions;
    • Practice during the week with NNG members to prepare them for the environment in which they will be flying.
    ________________________________________

    Again I would like to thank all of the participants in this week's duel event. You all flew expertly and made the tournament a lot of fun. We hope to see you at more duels and hear back from you as we tune this event to better meet our community.

    Nj WInds and Ernst for taking the reigns on this one. I think Goobs found a tool that might help. I unfortunately cannot promise to on every Sat night that early. We do need however to run multiple rooms with multiple clashes going at a time. Maybe do 4v4?

    This weekend's tournament must be run by someone else since it is my wife's 21st birthday. I will still be around to set it up during the week and the start of the day. But after 5 on Saturday I'll be busy.

    Thank you
