Xenforo has been facing some spambot attacks lately. To combat this I've changed our account signup form to utilize a KeyCaptcha. Instead of answering a tricky question or typing in the letters seen on the screen, the user is required to assemble a picture / puzzle before being approved to move on. Give it a try by creating a dummy account if you want. It's pretty neat Another way I'm fighting the spambots is through manual approval of new accounts. This means, unless I approve the accounts in the "Users Awaiting Approval" area, they are not allowed to use the forums. Lastly, I just wanted to mention that I approved 14 new forum members over the past 3 days. Good stuff! If anyone sees a spam account somehow make it through or notices anything funny on the forums either report it to me or one of the other admins and we'll get it taken care of. Thanks!!
Question: would people coming to the forums to contest a ban have to wait for acount approval before they are able to post?
Linch has a point. I like the idea of just building a house picture. If they arent a full member and dont apply within a week, delete them
Yes they would. I check the Users Awaiting Approval list multiple times a day. I'll put a bit of inconvenience on the banned users behalf before I let a spambot potentialyl hose our forums. I'll be doing manual approvals for another week. If I don't see anymore spambots in the list, (which I haven't since switching to KeyCaptcha) then I will switch back over to auto approvals. I just want to err on the side of caution for now.
Speaking as one who got in on the new system it works perfectly. My account was approved the next day.
Thanks for letting me know. Was wondering how it was from the perspective of someone going through the process.
Aye, took a day, no major hassle, apart from me having "Creative" methods to buidling cars, but that was me being silly.
